School Farming
posted (June 4, 2010)
The Muslim primary school in Belize City celebrated of healthy eating this week with awareness programme and special projects. Today they also had a march through the city. But they aren't just all talk and fancy posters. They are growing their own food in an open lot right behind the school on Central American Boulevard. We had a look at what was growing today:...

Jahseed X, Muslim School
"In about 3 months we were able to produce this crop of corn. What we really want to show to the community and to the nation is that with a little bit of resources we can do a lot. We just began and we have reaped a lot of corn, we will have a next crop very soon and we just want to tell the community take and isolate the lots, find the empty places in the city and plant. Not because you are in the city you cannot plant. More and more in Belize food is the issue, right? The more we can become self reliant and enable ourselves to produce food and become more productive the more we will become successful in the future. We need to plant more Belize that is the message. We need to plant more."

Child Farmer
"We have ocro, cocoa, cantaloupe, cucumber, corns and some Chinese cabbage. We have muskmelon, cauliflower, onions, sweet pepper, calaloo we have beans, we have all kind of things in the garden."
