Has A Gun License; Still Remanded
posted (June 15, 2010)
Having a licensed firearm did not stop 30 year old fisherman Hopeton Westby from being remanded to prison. Westby was charged with discharging a firearm in public and possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, He pleaded guilty to the charges when he was arraigned yesterday in Magistrate's Court. He was remanded until today for the chemist to determine the level of alcohol. But Westby changed his plea from guilty when he returned to court. Magistrate Dorothy Flowers explained to him that guilty or not, the court cannot offer him bail because of the charge of possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. She remanded him into custody until July 27. The incident occurred on Saturday, June 12 on Marine Parade Drive in front of Memorial Park. The police reported that Westby took his licensed firearm and fired 2 shots in the air.
