Cop Accused Of Extortion
posted (June 17, 2010)
Twenty nine year police constable Elvis Mai, who allegedly extorted 40 dollars from 25 year old Cassandra Lino, was criminally charged today. Mai, pleaded not guilty and was offered bail of 2,000 dollars. Lino reported to police that around 3:20 pm on Tuesday afternoon she was driving from Hattieville into the city when she was stopped at the mile 3 police checkpoint on the Western Highway. She said that constable Mai then took her into the police booth, where he threatened to charge her for driving without a driver's license, driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of two marijuana seeds, a root and a weed roach, if she did not give him forty dollars.

Mai told her that the money was for the two BDF soldiers that were also stationed at the checkpoint. He said he had to pay them 20 dollars each because they will see that he is letting her go and she will have to repay him for the gesture when she sees him again. He then released Lino when she conceded and gave him the 40 dollars. She then reported the matter to police.

The case was adjourned until July 28th.
