Aggressive Rottweiler Attacks Child
posted (June 23, 2010)
By now, we all know about the case of Edmund Spain who died after being attacked by two pitbulls. But a lesser known case involved a 3 year old from Cayo who was mauled by her family's pet Rottweiler on Friday. She did not suffer fatal injuries, but she did get seriously bitten, so much so that she had to hospitalized for 5 days.

It happened as the toddler was outside eating on the stairs of her home and the dog which was supposed to be tied - got loose and attacked her. Laisha was badly bitten to the head and had to be transferred to the KHMH. Today we met up with the little girl and her parents as they were being released from the hospital

Arlini Herrera - Mother
"Friday I was at work and when my husband called me he said that my little daughter was bitten by the dog and I rushed home and she was already taken to the San Ignacio hospital and then the doctor there told us that she needs to come here to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and she needs a CT scan."

And while you can't see it because of the bandage bundled over her head, Laisha was bitten 8 times to the head by her pet Rottweiler and had to receive 24 stitches.

Abimael Herrera
"So far they say it looks clean she only has a fracture to the skull, one of the canines went through."

According to the family, this is not the first time the dog has shown aggressive behaviour.

Arlini Herrera
"Yes before with my son. It was nothing severe, but we didn't think about what would have happened with her."

Monica Bodden
"And also you guys mention that the dog is usually kept tied. What happen that day?"

Abimael Herrera
"Well that day we tie him before we went to work but somehow he got loose and we did not know. The baby was eating and she went downstairs, I think the dog attack her for her food. From small we are raising that dog, we always thought that your dog is your best friend; instead of hurting you it should protect you. We never thought that it would hurt our baby like this."

Monica Bodden
"Now for those who have young ones at home and they have these aggressive dogs. What advice would you like to give to them?"

Arlini Herrera
"Always be on the lookout for your kids, never leave them alone and if you can prevent this kind of incident, please parents be attentive."

Abimael Herrera
"It's true we need to keep the dog well tied if he is so aggressive or don't have those type of dogs at home."

Monica Bodden
"To have seen your daughter in that condition on Friday. What was it like for you as a mother?"

Arlini Herrera
"It was very difficult."

Abimael Herrera
"Six days we are here and it's no joke. Every day I have to see the pain that she goes through when they are cleaning her wounds and the injection that they put every day. It's painful to see her."

And what about the dog? Well, from what the family told us, it seems that there was no cautious consideration or delicate euthanasia in this case: the Police simply shot and killed the dog after the attack....
