Reporter Roy Davis Ignored By Grudge-Holding Police
posted (July 1, 2010)
Roy Davis, he's a veteran journalist and presently the court reporter for 7news. As court reporter he often has to take pictures of persons who've been taken to court and don't want to be photographed. It's his job but it also makes him the target of some accused persons who are angry about getting their pictures on air.

But what about when one of those accused persons is also a police-man? Today Davis discovered that when that policeman's duty is to settle beefs and not to uphold the law, it's an even more difficult situation.

That reality was brought crashing home this evening when Davis's beach cruiser was stolen from right here in front of Channel 7's studio on Albert street. It happened at a few minutes to 6:00 when Davis had his bicycle parked downstairs in our office. It was locked and a young man just walked up and carried it off. Our office staff called and told him immediately and Davis rushed out with a security guard who is posted on Albert street as a crime deterrent.

The young man who is allegedly named Clint couldn't have gotten very far carrying a locked bicycle in his hand. And he didn't. Davis and the security guard found him a block away on East canal. The security guard got on his cell phone and called a police patrol - and they came. It's what happened next that left Davis and us here at 7news stunned:...

Roy Davis, Reporter
"When I reached by the canal side I told the person to just give me my bike, he said if I came for my bike he will burn my skin. Well, I don't know if he had a gun or not so I hesitated, so the security guard who was with me said he call the police. I then saw a Belize Defense Force truck with a lot of B.D.F. soldiers and a Police Officer pulled up to the side. A Police Officer and two B.D.F soldiers got out of the truck, so i told the Officer I need your assistance, the person just went down Plues Street carrying the bike and I need your assistance. The Police Officer looked at me and said, 'you don't remember me? You don't remember you put me on T.V., I am not helping you, and you better try to help yourself.'"

Jim McFadzean
"You told him exactly what happen and what kind of assistance you needed?"

Roy Davis
"Yes, and he told me he will not help me because I had put him on T.V. Now I am surprised because I don't know, that's a real blatant thief right on Albert Street, right in front of Channel 7. Policemen are usually right on the corner there; I don't know how I didn't see any now. But It was the last thing I expected, I could not believe it."

The bike is a red Nankon beach cruiser. After our interview, Davis went to the police station to make a formal complaint.
