Thirty two year old Kenneth Garcia, who was charged with the murder of his 54 year old uncle Sergio Garcia but was convicted of manslaughter, was sentenced to 12 years today in Belmopan Supreme Court.
Justice Gonzalez said he subtracted four years from the sentence for the time Garcia spent as a remanded prisoner, leaving him 8 years to serve out his sentence.
Before he decided on the sentence, Justice Gonzales took into consideration the testimony of 3 character witnesses, the testimony of Garcia, and a submission from one of his attorneys, Dickie Bradley. Garcia said he was sorry for what happened and he has accepted Christ as his saviour. He also said that he is the father of a 7 year old girl.
Sergio Garcia was struck on his head with a piece of pipe at the home of his brother - who is the father of Kenneth Garcia.
Sergio died the following day, September 23rd, 2006 at the Western Regional Hospital.
