We don't often report on suicides, but one that happened in Dangriga this morning is truly a tragedy and brings a case of utter social despair into sharp focus. This morning at a few minutes to one 37 year old Dona Yvette Palacio was found dead by her 10 year old daughter.
Sister of the deceased Charlotte Palacio told us this evening that her sister killed herself tying a rope around her beck and jumping off the bed.
Charlotte Palacio told us her sister was an alcoholic and arrived home last night in her customary drunken rage. She says her three children who live in the house with her were aware of her suicidal tendencies because she had tried to kill herself twice before so they had her on a suicide watch. But with the rage she was in, none of them dared go close to her.
But when she suddenly went quiet, her ten year old daughter went to heck on her and found that she had hanged herself in her room.
The ten year old woke her 16 year old brother and her aunt Charlotte who lives in the same yard and takes care of another one of her sister's children - one who is cripple and blind.
