Killer denied Appeal; Must Serve Life Sentence
posted (July 21, 2010)
45 year old Miguel Herrera Sr. will have to serve out his life sentence at the Hattieville Prison after the Privy Council denied him leave for appeal.

Herrera was convicted of a particularly hideous crime. In September of 2007, he killed his wife's 19 year old sister, Miran Figueroa by strangling her with what's known locally as a "tit-tie" vine. He and some other men had kidnapped her and her three year old son from her home in Silk Grass. They took her to an area about 2 miles off the Hopkins Road where they raped and killed her.

Evidence produced at the Supreme Court trial showed that they had told his wife that if she left him, he would kill one of her sisters.

They then took her 3 year old son, Alejandro Damien Gonzalez to the Kendall River where Herrera instructed one of them men to thrown him off the bridge into the river to drown. The man pretended to do so, but instead left the child at a bus stop.

The child was found wandering the road some time after.

After the Supreme Court judgment was upheld by the Belize Court Of Appeals, the Privy Council found that there was no merit to the grounds of appeal. With that, Herrera cannot launch another appeal in court.
