posted (July 22, 2010)
There was another shooting in the City this morning. It happened early, around 7:00 and the first reports that went out were that the victim had died. But despite the fact that Jeffrey Roches was shot four times, he survived.

Monica Bodden found out more.

The blood stains on this street corner mark the spot where 35 year old Jeffery Roches was shot this morning around 7 o'clock. According to his common-law-wife, Roches had just left home to go to work when she heard about 5 shots.

Carolyn Bowen, Common-law-wife
"Well this morning I got up early because I usually bake journey cake, when he goes to work he usually take journey cake with him. But this morning he just jumps on his bicycle and went through the gate. I feel like he was coming back for the journey cakes, I feel like he just went to park his bicycle outside, but he never did come in. I ask a young man if he went and he said yes. But it seems that as he reaches around the lane I heard about 5 shot. I run around the lane, when I reach there I see him on the laying on the street with his bag."

It is said that Roches was riding his bicycle on Basra Street heading towards Euphrates Avenue when he was approached by two gunmen who fired several shots at him hitting him to the neck, the right side of his buttocks, right leg and right side of his abdomen. But even though he survived his attack, he is still listed in a critical condition at the KHMH- and his wife says she is asking everyone for their prayers.

Carolyn Bowen
"A lot of people get gunshot and they die, but I ask for prayers to help save his life. He talk to me, he have life right there and he is fighting, I ask him for the strength to fight. I am going to the church to pray and ask the Lord to heal and protect him. With the strength of the Lord to look upon him and guide him in spirit."

Bowen says she has no idea why anyone would want to kill her husband.

Carolyn Bowen
"He is not somebody that is in trouble. I don't know if in his past he had problem with someone."

For this family the shock is doubled because Jeffery Roches' brother Phillip Roches was fatally shot three and a half months ago on March 29. That shooting took place in a yard on East Canal where he was preparing for another friends funeral and was shot for no reason to the head, chest and hand.

Jeffery Roches is currently listed in a critical but stable condition at the KHMH.
