A Camp For Reading
posted (July 22, 2010)
Seems we just can't get enough of summer camps, and there's no shortage of them. Most recently we've shown you the astrology and photography camps, but today we visited a summer program that's more basic but just as important:....

Here at the Holy Redeemer Primary School, their hosting a camp teaching kids how to read and while normally summer camp provide a means of getting children out of the house and doing things they enjoy, these students don't have time for arts and crafts when learning to read is a challenge they must overcome.

We spoke to the organizer who told us why it was necessary.

Emaun Hyde
"Reading is something you learn during the year. All through the year students are learning how to read, so why did you decide to have a summer camp dedicated to reading and learning how?"

Tania Alamilla Mahler, Reading Camp Organizer
"Parents have come to us and asked us to please help the kids because they aren't getting the phonics in school So what the parent committee from Holy Redeemer decided to do is get some teachers from outside to come in a teach the kids how to read. Well hopefully the kids will learn how to read better because they cannot read properly, with their spelling and socializing because we're teaching them to socialize also."

Emaun Hyde
"What exactly are they learning here during the day? What is a typical day for them when they come here?"

Tania Alamilla Mahler
"They're learning their phonics; they're learning how to blend words. So that is very important for the kids."

Emaun Hyde
"How does it feel being a part of something like this where you're helping children?"

Tania Alamilla Mahler
"It feels good giving back to the kids, because the kids are the future. So that's what we're doing, giving back to the community, to the school, to our school."

Kallen Johnson, Reading Camp Participant
"It helps me by reading, helping me learn to read."

Emaun Hyde
"So you think you're learning to read better."

Kallen Johnson
"Yes I think so."

Emaun Hyde
"How so."

Kallen Johnson
"Good."

Emaun Hyde
"Are you enjoying it."

Kallen Johnson
"Yes I am."

Emaun Hyde
"Do you think you're friends are going to be shocked next year when you can read very well."

Kallen Johnson
"Maybe."

Kayla Mahler, Reading Camp Participant
"It's helping me a lot."

Emaun Hyde
"How you think you're reading better."

Kayla Mahler
"Yes I think I'm reading much better than how I use to. We read a lot of stories and then we would write a paragraph about it and I really think that is helping me more."

Emaun Hyde
"What your favourite part of the camp so far."

Kayla Mahler
"Meeting new friends."

Emaun Hyde
"You think the summer camp has helped you in reading a writing better?"

Justin Gentle, Reading Camp Participant
"Yes miss."

Emaun Hyde
"How? In what way?"

Justin Gentle
"By readings and writing and writing journals every day I come here."

Emaun Hyde
"What's your favourite part?"

Justin Gentle
"Playing games with my friends."

We even got a brave volunteer who wanted to show off his reading skills.

The reading camp was organized by the Holy Redeemer Primary School Committee, and began on July 5th and is scheduled to run through to the 30th. The cost is one dollar a day and it runs from 9 to 11 am.
