Schools Will Not Be Overrun By Their Own Garbage
posted (August 24, 2010)
When we left you last night, the city's schools had been put on short notice that in the upcoming school year - which is just days away - Belize Waste Control would not be picking up their garbage for free anymore.

The late notice was a shocker for most school administrations, which knew nothing of it, and only knew that they couldn't afford it.

So an emergency meeting was called this afternoon at city hall with school managers and the Belize District Education Office to try and find a way forward.

As we understand it, managers were vocal that they simply cannot afford it, and in the end the man who had delivered the bad news had some good news. Deputy Mayor "Philloughby" today told us that Waster Control will continue to pick up the garbage.

Phillip Willoughby, Deputy Mayor
"Where we at right now that the August 31 deadline for the cease of operation for Waste Control to remove garbage from the schools that date has now elapsed, that is non-existent to this end, so Belize Waste Control to this end will be removing the waste from the schools."

Jules Vasquez
"So I am saying, that they sent a letter August 17 saying this service which has been going on free for 19 years is at an end effective the new school year. You are saying that has been rescinded?"

Phillip Willoughby, Deputy Mayor
"They have retracted their position, yes. I am very grateful that we had a fruitful meeting with the sanitation contractor this morning and they will not be ceasing the operation in providing the essential services to the schools."

And while the problem is solved in the short term, Willoughby said that the ministry of education and Waste Control will try to find a long term solution....
