All That It Took To Pave A Lane
posted (August 24, 2010)
After a long closure, which left area residents plagued by dust storms, the portion of Water Lane from the swing bridge to the canal has finally been paved.

But why did it take so long in the first place? After all it's only a few hundred feet of street. We saw works minister inspecting the area this evening and so we asked him, does water lane set a new record for time spent paving to feet of road actually paved:...

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez, Minister of Works
"If you notice that the actual paving of the street only took 3 days, but preparing the sidewalk and the drainage took a month and a half, not months but a month and a half. But he who fails to prepare must prepare to fail. Like what I said this in reality started Friday to actually do the paving and finish Sunday night."

Jules Vasquez
"It shouldn't have taken 7 weeks."

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez, Minister of Works
"No, what really happen, the sidewalk and the proper level for the drainage is important. That is what is important in terms of getting it done right. It could have been 15 feet, it's just to get it done right the correct way."

Jules Vasquez
"But at this rate of progress, we can't pave much if we will take 7 weeks to pave a little strip of street."

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez, Minister of Works
"You are talking about rate of progress; you haven't seen St. Joseph Street, Orange Street, Wood Street, Johnson Street, but I am saying to you the pre-preparation of the sidewalk and drainage."

Martinez says the paving material is of a higher grade than the rgular chip and seal and so it should last longer. As he noted, the area has also been outfitted with sidewalks and drainage.....
