Carnival Camps Jump Off
posted (August 26, 2010)
The Carnival season started last night with the opening of Mas Camps on the southside. We visited two camps where like a doctor of revelry Monica Bodden was checking the pulse of carnival - here's what she found:....

Monica Bodden, Reporting
When we arrived at Black Pearl Carnival Band - these junior masqueraders were pumped up with energy.

Kendra Buller - Coordinator - Black Pearl
"Right now we are about 85 masqueraders and the carnival is really strong right now, we having a lot of fun with the kids as you can see. We are really excited."

Monica Bodden
"Tell me a little bit about the costumes this year."

Kendra Buller - Coordinator - Black Pearl
"This year Black Pearl has decided to portray children of the Nile, gateway to Egypt. we are representing queen Cleopatra and king Anubis and so we have decided to use the colors to portray the Egyptian girls basically so we are going to have a lot of Egyptian girls out there on carnival day."

Monica Bodden
"You guys have a reason why you chose that theme?"

Kendra Buller - Coordinator - Black Pearl
"Well the Egyptian; basically the gold; we have decided to incorporate the carnival colors along with the gold to see what it will become about and you can see the costume is very beautiful."

Monica Bodden
"Are you guys ready for carnival road march 2010?"

Kendra Buller - Coordinator - Black Pearl
"Yes we are. We are excited, my masqueraders are very hype up, all of us that are working on the costume are very excited. Carnival day as normal we are going out there to have a blast."

And for this one masquerader - she boastfully showed off her costume and her moves to go along with it.

Next Stop was Western Paradise Masqueraders - a newly formed junior band all the way from 8 miles. But even though it will be there first time in the road march - Band leader Justin Gill says they will be ready.

Justin Gill, Band Leader
"We have a total of 65 band members, we only have about 50 out here and we do exactly what the judges are asking for, to portray some costume, so that is what we are doing."

Monica Bodden
"Now tell me if you guys are ready for carnival road march 2010?"

Justin Gill, Band Leader
"I think we will be ready by that time. a few costume is ready but the finance is going very slow. we are asking if anybody wants to donate fell free and just come by in front of St. Martin's school and just place a donation because we will portray this year 'Life, sickness and death' things that people are facing and go through every day in life. Not only in Belize but all over the place. We have our white costume is portraying life and peace, we have pink which symbolizes cancer, we have red which is symbolizing HIV/AIDS. This rainbow is just a mixture of all the different colours, so I will say this is all disease in one. We have other colours like green which is symbolizing dengue, we have purple which is symbolizing diabetes, we have yellow which is symbolizing sickle cell anaemia. We have many other colours out here."

Overall, the energy was good but not overwhelming - but it's just the start of the season, and these revellers-in-waiting have plenty of time to get in mas mode.

The mas camps continue at this hour and our team is back on the streets. We'll have that report for you tomorrow.
