Two Guns Off The Street

Two men appeared in Magistrate's Court today to answer to charges of keeping a firearm and ammunition without a gun license.

In the first incident, police were on mobile patrol on Kraal Road on Friday night when they saw two men riding towards them. The police attempted to search both and 29 year old Cordel Baptist got off his bicycle and tried to run but he was apprehended by one of the police officers who grabbed his left hand. The police officer reported that Baptist took something from the right side of his pants and when he looked he saw that it was a firearm. He said when he grabbed at it Baptist threw it over a zinc fence into a yard. When the object was retrieved it was a .380 pistol with a magazine containing 5 rounds of ammunition.

In the second incident on Saturday night, police were on mobile patrol on Cemetery Road when they saw 38 year old Malverne Rodriguez by L.A Fashions acting suspiciously. When the police approached Rodriguez he tried to run but they apprehended and searched him and found a black Beretta 9 millimeter pistol. The police said they conducted a further search and found a magazine which with 13 live rounds of 9 millimeters caliber ammunition.

The men appeared separately and each pleaded not guilty to the charge however; they were both denied bail because of the nature of the offences. Baptist was remanded in custody until September 30 while Rodriguez was remanded until October 14.
