Teenager Murdered In Driving Rain
posted (September 2, 2010)
Last night at ten, residents in the area of West Canal and Church Street were startled by the sound of a single gunshot. The shot was at point blank range into the head of a teenager on a bicycle.

7news was on the scene shortly after where we found that this 17 year old's brother had been killed two and a half years prior - and now his family was being tormented with another cold blooded killing:

Jules Vasquez, Reporting
Under a relentless downpour, a motionless 17 year old Jodrick Thompson lay dead on Church Street folded over his bicycle. He had been shot in the head.

The driving rain, dramatized the crime scene, making it seem almost cinematic, but this was no movie, this was the life of a 17 year old, taken away with a single shot behind his ear, his head left to rest on a drain cover, his bare feet in the middle of the narrow street.

Myrna Smith, Grandmother of the Deceased
"He did not deserve this because if anybody says that he gang bang or he is this and that, he did not deserve this because he is an nice young man seventeen."

With sparse illumination from a pair of headlights, the scenes of crime team huddled to scour the area as best they could through the sheets of rain. They found only one expended casing.

No one in the area knew him and police had to search the body for identification. Residents say that at about 10:10 - they heard a single shot; it killed Thompson immediately as he tumbled to the ground.

Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"Our initial investigations reveal that he was riding from the direction of George Street towards West Canal when apparently a lone gun man approach him firing a gunshot causing his injury."

Police sources say that he had been threatened minutes earlier when he got into a dispute on George street. Shortly after, THOMPSON was shot.

Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"Well Jules we are investigating from several angles, it's too early for us to let out that kind of information but as soon as we have a motive for the murder I'll be the first to report it to you."

His father Harold Thompson says he knows his son has a girlfriend on George Street:

Jules Vasquez
"So far the police report shows that he went to George Street to buy a fried chicken and it appears that he had a counteraction with somebody out there."

Voice of Harold Thompson, Father of the Deceased
"He had a girlfriend that live on George Street and he was coming from her house and according to what I hear somebody followed him and shot him in the ear."

His grandmother Myrna Smith said he had been getting threats on his cell phone

Myrna Smith, Grandmother of the Deceased
"They send some threatening words on the phone and when my daughter was telling (his mother) I tell her not to delete it; so she took it to the police now. I told her not to delete it because it is evidence."

Those threats she says stem from the murder of his brother, Eighteen year old Devon Darrel Thompson Who was killed in April of 2008:

Myrna Smith, Grandmother of the Deceased
"Well they kill my son about 3 years; the 28th of February, 2008 and the case had tried and it is on hang jury and then they put it off and after that the case come back up this year and later on a few witness refuse to talk and they start to threaten my son and I try to tell him to call that off because we have to go down that same road."

A road this family is too familiar with:

Myrna Smith, Grandmother of the Deceased
"I don't like this Jules because everybody for us will die by gun and we don't get any justice. We didn't any justice with papa and we didn't get any justice with my other grandson, then with him now. Nobody sew anything."

Harold Thompson, Father of the Deceased
"I don't know, I am not angry with anybody, I left everything in the good Lord's hands. The first one went just like that and this one is going just like that too."

Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"We cannot hide from reality, that's a fact that he lost 2 sons to gun violence and it's a very sad situation. But never the less our investigations; will be very be intensive and we will try our best to bring closure in this case."

For historical context we note that Jordick Thompson's brother was killed on his way to the ACC fair in 2008. He was also shot in the head - but it happened on Berkeley street, 3 blocks east of last night's killing.
