posted (September 6, 2010)
All of last week, we showed you the carnival mas camps - and all those late nights spent at camp headquarters was building up to the big moment, the king and queen when those mega costumes had to prove themselves on the MCC.

Our team was there and Monica Bodden reports.

Monica Bodden, Reporting
The MCC Grounds were packed with onlookers on Saturday night - as 29 competitors -10 Kings and 19 Queens took the stage to show off their elaborate carnival costumes. It was indeed considered fierce competition as these bands went out in full force - bringing their best performances to the stage. In the end there could only be 4 winners.

In the junior Queen category - Pickstock Carnival Band took home first place along with 3,000 dollars in cash… The Junior King Category went to -Sunshine Masqueraders and also 3000 dollars cash prize.

Monica Bodden
"What was the king costume about?"

Leroy Nunez - Sunshine Masqueradors
"It's all about like under the sea."

Monica Bodden
"What was the name of what you portray?"

Leroy Nunez - Sunshine Masqueradors
"I don't really remember right now. A lot of things are on my mind. I am so excited."

Monica Bodden
"Now you came in what?"

Leroy Nunez - Sunshine Masqueradors
"First."

Monica Bodden
"How do you feel to actually be first place winner in this competition?"

Leroy Nunez - Sunshine Masqueradors
"I feel good but I came out with a mentality to come in first."

For the senior King and Queen competition Mother Nature's Creation took both first place prizes and cash prizes of 4 thousand dollars each.

Leroy Green - King
"Well I feel very gratified, I feel satisfied, I feel happy, I feel excited especially since this year I was really not planning to go in but the group encourages me and different friends encourage me and I say ok I am going for it again."

Monica Bodden
"What was it like out there on the stage?"

Leroy Green - King
"To tell you the truth I went out to the steps rather sleepy and tired since we've been out here since 4:30 this evening. When I heard the crowd shouting for me It gave me that rush of adrenalin to go and do what I like to do."

Monica Bodden
"Now I notice that you guys came out with a different introduction. What was that all about?"

Leroy Green - King
"That was to tie the whole theme of the story together and rather make it more exciting because they gave you 25 points for dramatic presentation and to m just going there and announce your name and going on a stage to dance is not dramatic. So we came out with those 2 introductions to add to the dramatic appeal of the whole thing."

Monica Bodden
"Now I know you've been the king for a lot of years, let's just put it that way. Where do you find all that energy to just come up with those costume because those costume gets bigger every year."

Leroy Green - King
"I think it's just what you feel you know. I don't believe people get old. I believe people mature like good wine and somewhere I pull up the energy and I go and do my thing and this is a good lesson to the younger folks who think that youth is everything."

And even though it's only their first year in carnival - Western Paradise Carnival Band won first and second place for the junior queen section and third place for junior king. In all the newly formed band took home 5,000 dollars in cash.

Justin Gill - Band Leader
"And I prove to the next bands that I could do it. And all of them who were doubting me and sending threats to me ( I want this to go over the air) bands send threats to me and try get to my workers to tell them to stop work along work me. No man curse what God has bless. We come out here with our good heart and we win over them. We never really come to win everything, we just come to have fun and we still win and that prove to them that any new band that comes out could take it anytime, any day over all the old bands. And I did it for the first time and it will happen again and we will bring it road march! No doubt. (crowd screaming)."

Saturday night's event was indeed a pleasant treat for the eyes - leading up to the Carnival Road March this coming Saturday.

Just a recap of the winners - Pickstock Carnival band won first place in the junior queen category and the junior King Category went to the Southside Masqueraders. For senior King and Queen - Mother Nature's Creation took home both first place titles. The Carnival Road March is on Saturday September 11th.
