Gough Gets Off
posted (September 8, 2010)
Thirty-eight year old Dr. John Gough, one of two men charged with wounding Carlos Zelaya Jr on February 15, was freed of the charge today in the #2 Magistrate Court.

But the second defendant, thirty-two year old Dr. Egbert Nicholson, Gough's neighbor was found guilty of the charge and was given a one year suspended sentence by Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser.

She told Nicholson that she must commend him for looking out for his neighbor, but there is a limit in protecting himself and others.

In the case of Dr. Gough she said she had doubts about his role in the incident and she must give him the benefit of those doubts.

Zelaya testified that he was beaten first by Nicholson who he said punched him several times in his face and then by Dr. Gough who beat him in his face with an object. Zelaya said he couldn't tell what the object was but Leal Martinez, an eyewitness for the prosecution, testified that the object appeared to have been a firearm.

Nicholson admitted that he punched Zelaya on Dolphin Drive but he said he saw Zelaya come out of Dr. Gough's Yard by jumping over the fence. Dr. Gough denied that he beat Zelaya. He said he was in his vehicle talking on his cell phone while Nicholson was involved in the altercation.

Dr. Gough and Nicholson were represented by attorney Ellis Arnold.
