Cowboy A No-Go For Dad’s Funeral
posted (September 16, 2010)
And we stay on the news of funerals of those killed in Sunday's ruthless spree….

The funeral for 69 year old Apolonio Cowboy Hernandez will be held tomorrow but it looks like his son and namesake Kevin Cowboy Alvarez will not be allowed to attend.

As we've reported, former cop Kevin Alvarez is on remand for murder and attempted murder. But he has not been convicted and it is standard practice that prison inmates are permitted to attend funerals of their immediate families - under the escort of prison security.

Kevin's sister Lisa Alvarez told us this evening that they went through all the proper channels to have this done for her brother - meaning they applied to a magistrate - who then passed it on to the Kolbe Central Prison as is the procedure. But the prison says Cowboy Alvarez is a security risk, so the family would have to get police escorts. The family wrote to the police requesting those four escorts but this evening Lisa Alvarez told us that the commissioner of police refused saying it is Kolbe's responsibility.

After that futile back and forth, Alvarez told us this evening that the family does not know what to do. She says the authorities are denying her family the right to mourn.

The funeral for Apolonio Hernandez will be at St. Ignatius church tomorrow at 2:00 pm.

The 69 year old was killed on Sunday morning at 7:00 am on west canal. He was riding his bike form the grocery store when he was shot once to the head. Police have no motive and the family believes it was just a random killing.
