Police Say They Didn’t Knock Down Eight Year Old Girl
posted (September 28, 2010)
In yesterday's newscast we told you about an 8 year old girl whose mother claimed she was knocked down by a police truck that never stopped to render aid. The incident happened around noon on Friday. According to Catherine Michael, her daughter 8 year old Mikiesha Palacio was knocked down by a gold colored four door police pickup truck. Today Police Press Officer Fitzroy Yearwood stopped by our studios and told Seven News - there were witnesses on the scene who claim otherwise.

Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer
"On Friday we had sent out a release about this accident and we actually opened simultaneous investigations into this incident. From the criminal aspect, the head of traffic Mr. Williams is investigating that aspect and Mr. Rivero is doing an internal investigation because some of the witnesses are alleging that it was a police vehicle that hit this child and other witnesses are saying that the vehicle that transported this child to the hospital that the driver of that vehicle actually hit the child. It's a very unfortunate situation; an 8 year old has been hurt as a result of some form of negligence of this sort by either of the drivers, but what I can tell you is that we are doing a reconstructing of the scene this evening, that is underway as we speak, but at the end of the day if anyone is found responsible for this accident, that person will be charged. If it is the police that person will be charged both criminally and internally because we know the law and we know that it is illegal for you not to render aid if you are involved in a accident and it's also an offence not to report an accident to the authorities. If it's the driver of the other vehicle that they are alleging actually did it that person will be charge also."

Police are investigating and statements have been taken but no one has been served with a notice of intended prosecution.
