Mad As Hell, And Not Going To Take It Anymore
posted (September 30, 2010)
A group of angry and frustrated Lake I residents from Tibruce Street are up in arms tonight about what they call "outright neglect and indifference to their well being by the city council." The residents are referring specifically to their inability to get into and out of their homes without having to navigate small ponds that have formed on their street. The problem is drainage on Tibruce and adjacent streets. But couple that with neglect and rains from Tropical Depression Matthew, and residents have been plagued by flooded yards, snakes and mosquitoes. Today they called us to say enough is enough!:….

Mark Burgess, Lake I resident
"It is like this for ever so long whenever we have rain we have this problem here. The hurricane come and blow across and we still have this problem."

Jim McFadzean
"Has anybody from City Council come out to look at the streets and to evaluate what the problem is?"

Mark Burgess, Lake I resident
"We call them all the time and they say that they will check and they never come."

Jim McFadzean
"Obviously the problem here is drainage, Is that correct."

Mark Burgess, Lake I resident
"Right, we need better drainage out here. We don't have anything out here, no assistant, no nothing."

Jim McFadzean
"How people get to come back and forth? I assume that you have kids that have to use the street to get home."

Mark Burgess, Lake I resident
"They walk in water over here. They have to walk in water, that's the only way they are going to get home."

Henry Benguche, Lake I resident
"You know how much time it's like this and it won't go down right away, it's not as soon as the rain stop the water will go. This water will settle for the next couple of days, probably for the next couple of weeks. We can't say weeks, we have to say months because nothing is not happening to get the streets sorted out, nothing is not happening to get the drain sorted out. I live on Croton Lane and I try keep my area clean, I try keep my drain clean but by the time you get to the other part of the drain; you don't have any drain so the water back up. So it can be here for the next couple of years if nobody comes to do the right thing. We only could do so much, every time it rains this is what happens, sometime it doesn't have to rain too hard and this is what happen. My major concern is the kids that go to school, I have grand kids that go to school and every time something like this happen the kids have to walk thru this water and the kids they get sick. We don't have money to go to any doctor like that, we don't have that kind of money, so my concern is that every time the kids have to walk thru this water, sometime the adults, we are getting older and we can't be running in this water like when we were much younger. Along with the water and the sickness, we don't know what is going on in here, they tell us to get rid of the fresh water from out of your place, get rid of the coconut shell and thing like that, and I feel like this is one of the biggest nesting places for the mosquito. We are really tired of this."

Seven News spoke with Councilor Dean Samuels whose portfolio is Southside works. He said that he sent his works manager today to assess the problem and report back to him on what's going to be needed to repair the current situation.

He will then get the necessary material and residents should see work beginning as early as next week. …
