Escape Artist Sentenced For His Favourite Crime

Thirty five year old escape artist Dennis Quilter who had 7 previous convictions for escape got his eighth conviction today in the Magistrate's Court when he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 5 years by the Chief Magistrate Margaret McKenzie. Chief Magistrate Mckenzie, stipulated that it is to run consecutively to a sentence of 28 years Quilter is serving for burglary, damage to property and other offences. With this conviction, his total sentence now goes up to 33 years.

Quilter and four other prisoners escaped from Belize Central Prison in Hattieville around 11:55pm on April 11, 2010. they escaped by forcing open the lock on their cell in Tango 10 and by over powering the prison guard, Emmanuel Barrow. The other escapees were Luis Cocom, Juan Melendez, Jose Melgar and Terry Bainton. They have all been captured. Quilter was the last prisoner at large. He was captured around 4:25pm on August 18th on Baymen Avenue. Yesterday Cocom appeared in the Magistrate's Court and pleaded guilty to escape. He was sentenced to one year by Chief Magistrate McKenzie.
