The customs department is also making news this evening for the interception of another container of phenyl-acetic acid. You may recall that's one of the ingredients used to make meta-amphetamines - an illicit drug. It was substituted after the shipment of pseudo-ephedrine was illegalized. Well, you may recall that back in May of this year a container of that chemical was intercepted that was bound for the free zone.
Well, that is the same story in this case. The container arrived from Shanghai China on October fifth destined for a company in the Corozal free zone called secret garden.
It was manifested as 320 - eleven - point five gallon drums of soap. Now, the business called secret garden deals in health food, not soap, so the shipment raised a flag.
Customs sought a warrant to authorize them to search it; that was executed this evening and inside they found what strongly appear to be 320 drums of phenyl acetic acid. It will be sent for testing to confirm and we'll have more on it tomorrow….
