Belize Makes Some Distinctions At Commonwealth Games
posted (October 12, 2010)
When they left of the country almost two weeks ago, coach for the National Cycling Team, Perry Gibson, said that the cycling team heading to the nineteenth Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, had one major goal: to complete the race ahead of all the other English-speaking Caribbean territories.

Well tonight Belize should be proud because we made history, not one but two Belizean Cyclists completed the road race, which is a first for Belize. We were also the first to come in for the Caribbean, and were second best in the Western Hemisphere with only Canada ahead.

The male race of one hundred and sixty eight kilometers saw the participation of one hundred and thirty three athletes from thirty three countries. At the end of the race Greg Lovell finished in 26th place making it the best finish for the Caribbean.

The other cyclist Edgar Arana also completed the race. Big countries dominated the cycling with Australia, New Zealand and Scotland taking the top three places respectively.

A press release notes that since they arrived in New Delhi, the cyclists have been experiencing respiratory difficulties due to the polluted air in the city. Despite all this they continue to work as team as they move on to the Individual Time Trial tomorrow in which one female and three males will participate.

In the athletics category, Belizean Katy Seal set a new Belizean Record in the female 100m Hurdles event of the Heptathlon.

Seal also established her personal best in the High Jump.

The Belizean contingent is expected back in the country by early next week.
