Two Tower Riggers Killed
posted (October 14, 2010)
And aside from that shooting in the city - there are a number of calamitous events to report from across the country tonight.

We start in Saint Margaret's Village on the Hummingbird Highway. Two tower riggers were killed this morning when a crane failed.

It happened at Over The Top in Saint Margaret's at 10:30 am. Employees of a company called Efficient Tower Service were setting up a 150 foot monopole tower on the property. The company is contracted by Telemedia to set up the tower for cell phone antennae.

The Crane operator, one Rempel told police that Michael Pandy and Keith Nicholas were harnessed to a section of the tower which was being hoisted into position by the crane. But the cable on the crane slipped off and the section of the tower went hurtling towards the ground. It landed upright and both riggers were harnessed so they did not fall off and neither were they crushed by it. But it seems that either the crane's cable or the fittings on the tower damaged them badly and they both received massive injuries to their lower body.

Pandy was pronounced dead at the western regional hospital while Keith Nicholas was rushed to Belize City. But his injuries were too extensive and he died on the way there.

A Telemedia representative told us this evening they could not give any details as their relevant personnel were still investigating.
