Shot by Man He Tried To Rob, And Now Charged

Twenty three year old Shawn Edwards, one of two men who allegedly attempted to rob "Pica-meh" Bar and was shot in the process, could hardly walk when he appeared today in Magistrate's Court and was charged with 2 counts of wounding, 2 counts of use of deadly means of harm and attempted robbery.

Chief Magistrate Margaret Mckenzie explained to Edwards that the court cannot offer him bail because of the nature of the offences, she remanded him into custody until November 25.

The incident occurred shortly before 10pm on Saturday October 16. Jose Santos Acosta, the owner of Pica-me Bar, located on Mosul Street, reported to the police that he was behind the counter of the bar when two men entered, one of them armed with a pistol. Acosta said the man who was unarmed jumped behind the counter and began to wrestle with him. The gunman then fired two shots, one struck him in the left side of his chest and the other caught his hand. Acosta said he then drew his licensed firearm and shot one of the men 4 times and the second man escaped. Another person, Sumara Lopez, was shot by the gunman. The man who was shot by Acosta was identified as Shawn Edwards. According to reports, he was shot in his testicles, navel, left upper back and left shoulder. Edwards was admitted to ward at Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital. He was released from the hospital today when he was well enough to go to court.
