posted (October 27, 2010)
Sixty two year old Baxter Matthews, a Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of the Supreme Court, became an inmate of the Belize Central Prison today when he appeared in the #1 Magistrate's Court and was remanded into custody after he was charged with keeping ammunition without a gun license, possession of a controlled a drug and possession of pipe. Another person, 49 year old Dorla Garbutt, was also remanded into custody, after she was charged with the same offences. They are to return to court on November 26.

The charges are as a result of a search conducted yesterday by police at Matthews' house, located at 92 New Road. The police reported that they found one round of .38 calibre ammunition, an undetermined amount of suspected crack cocaine and a metal pipe used for smoking crack.

At the time Matthews and Garbutt were in the house.

Matthews said Garbutt was at his house sheltering from the hurricane and the bullet had been in his house from when his father was alive.
