Regional Tourney For Under 15 Basketballers Cancelled
posted (October 29, 2010)
BELIZE'S male under 15 basketball team has been practicing and assiduously fundraising to ensure that they can make it to the Centrobasket Tournament in Chiapas Mexico which was scheduled to run from November 1-6.

But they will have to sit and wait for another tournament because that one has been cancelled due to financial constraints. Paul Thompson, President of Belize Basketball Federation read the contents of the letter that they received via email:

Paul Thompson, President of the BBF
"Dear friends I hereby regret to inform you today, we receive a notification from the sports director of Guanajuato City, Mexico informing that they won't be able to host the Centrobasket U-15 championship 2010. For this reason the event is cancelled, CONCECABA will determined shortly with respect to the teams that will participate in FIBA America's U-16 championship in 2011."

Matthew Smiling, Coach
"They are disappointed honestly all of them. They are really disappointed because the work that they have been putting in tremendous, they are doing a lot of work and they were looking forward for this tournament. For years the coaching was trying to arrange games for the team, we won't break up the team, we will still keep the team together. I know Mr. Thompson and I have spoken about trying to get some international games in place here in Belize and also abroad. We have already made contact with Cancun; we have some people in Cancun who are trying to arrange some games for us next month."

Since that tournament has been cancelled, the federation is hopeful that Belize will be one of the three teams to advance to the FIBA U-16 Tournament.
