Hon. Carlos Says Roger Promised He Wouldn’t Run
posted (November 2, 2010)
Earlier on you saw Caribbean Shores area representative Carlos Perdomo donating a few mattresses to the disaster recovery effort.

And while the contribution is welcome and is sure to be used, 18 mattresses would not seem to be quite enough to stir the minister of defence into action under normal circumstances.

But these are not normal circumstances, not at all. And we'd guess the mini meda blitz has something to do with the announcement that Perdomo will be challenged by city Councillor Roger Espejo. Espejo has put in his name for the convention for Caribbean Shores - which must be held sometime before February of next year.

Perdomo told us he's not fazed.

Hon. Carlos Perdomo, Minister of Defence and Immigration
"We welcome the challenge. You know this is the United Democratic Party, so we don't run away from those kinds of challenges."

Jules Vasquez
"Do you feel disrespected by the fact that a rookie can openly challenge you or prepare to challenge you at a convention?"

Hon. Carlos Perdomo
"I don't feel disrespected. I mean I've been around a long time and we welcome the challenge but we are a little disappointed because he had promised that he wouldn't, and then all of a sudden he did. So again I go back to motive you know? But it's alright, we campaign and it's going to be a good UDP campaign and the people will decide."

Jules Vasquez
"Should elders in the party or senior persons in the party have intervened - as often happens in politics - and said stand down, the seniority is the issue here and it's not a fair it's not what the party wants?"

Hon. Carlos Perdomo
"Yes, just remember this is the UDP, not the PUP so we will give them the opportunity, that's the way we do things, although it will use up a little bit of resources that might not ordinarily have to do."

Espejo has declined comment at this time.
