Torres Case ends With A Whimper

Back in May of this year, the brutal beating of the blameless 36 year old Elwin Torres brought the police under heavy scrutiny.

Torres alleged that police beat him near the Hattieville roundabout after they wrongfully accused him and another man of firing shots at the checkpoint. Six officers were charged with the wounding of Torres.

And while the story carried the roar of public outrage - in the courts, that roar subsided to hardly a whimper as all 6 officers accused have now been cleared of charges.

On October 5th, four of those officers were freed of the charge due to lack of evidence. Today, charges against the remaining two, 38 year old Fernando Franzua and 35 year old Henry Nunez were dismissed by Magistrate Aretha Ford. But it wasn't because of lack of evidence. Torres testified that he did not want any further court action against the two men, since Franzua and Nunez, were not the persons who beat him….
