Gonguez In Guatemalan Gaol
posted (December 10, 2010)
And it might be a bag something just like that that Guatemalan police are accusing Oscar Dennis Gonguez of trafficking. Last week we reported that Gonguez was locked up in Guatemala on suspicion of drug trafficking. His family appeared in our news pleading for assistance from anyone who can help them bring home Oscar Dennis Gonguez. Well tonight we understand nothing has changed. The 22 year old man is still locked up in a Guatemalan jail. In an interview with 7news today, Gonguez's 2 sisters told us- that the past two weeks has been a rough stretch for the family.

Latania Gonguez, sister
"Last week Friday he call home and he told my mother not to worry but just to send his clothes and his stuff because they will have him there until February 2, 2011. On Monday when my sisters went, the lawyer told them that they charge my brother for illegal entry, now today he call back and say that they took him to court again and charge him for possession, this is almost 2 weeks after they hold him there. I don't really know anything else."

Monica Bodden
"So no idea when Dennis is coming back home?"

Latania Gonguez, sister
"We are not really sure when he will come back home, hopefully my sisters is going on another trip on Monday and will try come to a final conclusion of what will happen if he will be over there until or if they will release him or what."

Monica Bodden
"When you sisters go over that side, did they get a chance to see him?"

Latania Gonguez, sister
"Not all the time but sometimes because. When they went over there on Monday, they met with the lawyer, and the lawyer took them to the prison and they got a chance to see him but then according to the guards at the prison they don't have visiting hours until Wednesday 4 o' clock in the evening. When he call today he state that they have him down as an alien over that side and he need a birth paper and a police record and his social security card and something else but just for the record, my brother don't really have any police record because he is the type that don't give trouble. We try to fax his birth paper, and we are still waiting for an answer."

Monica Bodden
"So far how difficult has this been on the family?"

Latania Gonguez, sister
"Real difficult because it's like we are spending unnecessary money and not getting any results."

Monica Bodden
"You guys know what's his condition like over that side?"

Latania Gonguez, sister
"Up to today he is still telling us that he is not eating and then he has to get up early in the morning to work. He says that they treat him rough over that side. For every call he makes its like BZ$100. I don't really know what is the price of phone call over that side but every time he calls, the person that hands him the phone or whosoever want money for the phone calls and that is what they pressure him the most for. We don't really know if a phone call from over that side is $100 Belize, a 2 minute call or less. right now our only appeal is either to the government or to the minister of national security or foreign affairs or whoever just try look into it and try help we get our brother back over this side because to me Guatemala don't have any law and it's like they can come and take any Belizean and when you get over there you are lost."

Sharmae Gonguez, Sister
"They are just hustling off our heads, that's the way how I see it."

Monica Bodden
"How hard has this been for you?"

Sharmae Gonguez, Sister
"Very hard, many nights I don't sleep because what we have to go through at day time sometime night time is not really easy."

Gonguez was locked up in Melchor on the 28th of November- after Guatemalan police alleged that he had a bag of marijuana. Again the family is asking if anyone can assist them in getting back their loved one on Belizean Soil. If you know how to help them you can call 633-8181 or 625-4391.
