Employees Unite To Lobby For Canton’s Job
posted (December 15, 2010)
The Barrow administration is being asked once again to intervene and act as arbitrator for another one of the country's major agro-industries.

This time it's the Citrus Products of Belize Limited, where the Citrus Growers Association is making moves to axe the CEO of CPBL Dr. Henry Canton.

Now, in an unusual but defiant move, more than three hundred employees of the Citrus Products of Belize Limited, (CPBL) are said to have affixed their signatures to a letter in support of Canton. The letter dated Monday, December 13th was sent to the Prime Minister of Belize seeking his office's intervention to save Canton.

The letter to the Prime Minister states that an extra-ordinary general meeting of CPBL shareholders called for this Friday by the CGA with its stated intent to terminate the CEO of CPBL is unwarranted and has no merits, since quote: "the resolution contain misinformation and accusations that convey a wrong impression of CPBL, its entire Senior Management, and Staff."

The letter further states that the relationship had reached a "critical juncture which now threatens to undermine the viability and survival of the industry".

The employee release further accuses the CGA Management of what they describe as: "an illegal and hostile takeover of the industry by individuals who do not have the best interest of the industry at heart". Canton who has both the full backing of Banks Holdings and Citrus Mutual, a growers group critical of the CGA, has been at the center of controversy and at odds with the CGA who accuses him of mismanagement.

Canton's contract expires next year, but the CGA is pushing to replace him this Friday with Henry Anderson, who is the current CEO of the CGA. Meanwhile, Banks Holdings has filed for an injunction from the courts to prevent the meeting scheduled for 10 A.M. this Friday.
