posted (December 15, 2010)
Exactly one year ago - we showed you the mass plunder of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve by Guatemalans.

Tonight there is renewed concern about deforestation happening at accelerated levels in the Chiquibul Forest An increase in illegal logging in the Chiquibul Natioinal Park and Caracol Archaeological Reserve has raised alarm bells. Patrols have confirmed that illegal logging has extended as far as 7 kilometers inside Belize and extends south into the Chiquibul National Park for approximately 10 kilometers.

Over 8 thousand acres of forest cover have been lost in the Chiquibul National Park, while 3,500 acres of forest cover is said to have been lost in the Caracol Archaeological Reserve during a period of 20 years. v Friends for Conservation is calling for enhanced patrols', 'collaboration with Guatemalan forestry authorities', and 'conservation posts along hot spot areas to contain borderline incursions'.

The loss from the illegal activities is estimated in the tens of thousands. Unlike Xatero activity - which is on a decline, the illegal logging poses new challenges for Forest Rangers in the Chiquibul forest since it is better organized and the operation more systematic.
