Sugar: Will BSI Do Its Part?
posted (December 16, 2010)
Last night we showed you the opening of the Sugar Season at the Tower Hill Factory in Orange Walk.

As we told you the cane that we saw being brought in by the farmers was of visibly high quality. And indeed much of the onus was on them. But what about the factory? Last year as they integrated the BELCOGEN system - there were countless mechanical snags - which seriously affected the output of processed sugar - and everyone's bottom line.

So will the factory work right this year? We didn't look at that question last night - but tonight we will. Director of BSI Joey Montalvo said his factory is ready:..

Alfredo Ortega, Chairman, BSCFA Committee of Management
"We are committed on our side to do all that is in our part so that we can deliver this clean and fresh to the factory. The other side is the milling that the factory needs to do."

Joey Montalvo, Managing Director, BSI
"As millers we will do our part to ensure that we maximize and extract the greatest amount of sugar from the cane, our milling plant at Tower Hill factory and our power plant are ready to perform their functions, and our employees have work diligently in this very difficult period. I am assured by the management team that both plants are in a reliable state and they are ready for their functions, provided that the cane comes in at the required quality. We are confident that we will meet the milling targets that we have signed up in the memorandum of understanding."

Hon. Gaspar Vega, Deputy Prime Minister
"I am also convince that BSI is committed in ensuring that everything goes well with the plant and that they have the best grinding season that they have ever had. But I want to be real today and tell you that if BSI does not grind or mill what is committed, the government of Belize cannot lash them, the government of Belize cannot take them to jail and likewise if the cane farmers do not deliver the quality that they should or that they have made commitment to deliver, the government cannot lash them either or take them to jail. All that will happen is that we will lose our industry."

This year's target for processed sugar is 110,000 thousand tones of processed sugar - up more than 25% from the previous year..
