Cardona A No-Show At House Meeting
posted (December 17, 2010)
And while Faber is in as party chairman - is Marcel Cardona on the outs as Orange Walk East Area Representative? After being soundly defeated in Sunday's divisional convention - probably only the second time in Belize's political history that has happened to an incumbent - he did not appear at today's House Sitting.

We asked the Prime Minister about his status:…

Jules Vasquez
"Do you see Marcel Cardona attend today's house sitting, usually he does attend through all the adversity he has faced. It is your feeling that being a lame duck representative - because he has no future as a standard bearer, should he face a by-election? Would that be your choice or preference?"

PM Dean Barrow
"Not at all. The man was elected for the period of the government and in my view he should serve out his term but I can't tell why he is not here, can't tell you what his take on the situation is, I have not spoke to him since the convention. Nobody in the party has any intention of trying to force Mr. Cardona out of his seat. I just said that in my view he should serve out his term. Remember there are ministers that will be facing challenges in the conventions, the possibility that one or more might lose is very much in front of us. I would as a consequence of that say to a minister that you are a lame duck and you need to come out of the cabinet, no. If you are doing a good you stay there and I would hope that as hard that it might be that minister would be able to come to grips with the fact that they are lame duck. Potentially we are all lame duck; nobody knows what the next elections will do."
