Citrus Mutual: Canton Ouster Illegal
posted (December 29, 2010)
We've told you before about Belize Citrus Mutual - that's the citrus growers group which has successfully - in court at least - challenged the dominance of the Citrus Growers Association.

And while Belize Citrus Mutual does not have the membership numbers of the CGA - it does represent some of the largest farm owners - what you might call grower power - and those growers are sympathetic to embattled CEO of the Citrus Products of Belize Limited Dr. Henry Canton.

They today sent out a release weighing in on the proposed ouster of CEO Dr. Henry Canton. The release refers to a shareholders' agreement between CGA and minority shareholder Banks Holdings Limited which requires that at least two of the Banks Directors and at least two-thirds of the Board of Directors agree for any decisions to be made.

According to Citrus Mutual, that means that the resolution to remove Dr. Canton as CEO cannot be implemented and cannot be enforced because it did not meet those requirements.

The Citrus Mutual group concludes that, quote: "the CGA's management is trying to bluff their way into taking over control of CPBL through the back door…"

The release closes by asking for the intervention of the Prime Minister.

Belize Citrus Mutual cites figures stating that that it represents growers whose combined production amounts to 48% of the industry's total, while the CGA represents only 32%.
