BCVI Needs Its Braille Embosser Back!
posted (January 26, 2011)
The Belize Council for the Visually Impaired was already put out of its office when the Red Cross building was burnt down in late November. And now to add to its misfortune, the NGO's office was burglarized over the weekend.

Thieves made off with several pieces of equipment and property that was inside its store-room in the abandoned Red Cross building on Gabourel lane.

Those properties included, beds and mattresses used at BCVI's annual summer camps, along with text books that were donated by the Ministry of Education.

Also stolen was one of the organization's most import pieces of equipment - the braille embosser which is used to transfer books and other printed materials into Braille for blind and visually impaired students. Today the Regional Field Officer for BCVI, told 7news more.

Liza Zeyala
"The embosser is very vital equipment for the visual impaired children. It's no use for the public out here because what we use the embosser for is to scan books and put the books in brail for the children who are visually impaired."

Jules Vasquez
"Now this isn't the sort of thing you buy at Angelus Press. I mean it's a highly specialize piece of equipment."

Liza Zeyala
"That's very true; it cannot be purchase anywhere here in Belize. We got it from the states and nobody would use it but BCVI."

Jules Vasquez
"So are you making an appeal for whoever stole it to please hand it in to somebody?"

Liza Zeyala
"Definitely, if anybody know about the embosser; it's a big equipment, could you please pass it on to the police station or call 203506 to get to BCVI office."

Jules Vasquez
"Until you have this, the children you all service are at a major disadvantage?"

Liza Zeyala
"That's right because we can't emboss any books for the children in brail especially for the ones at school."

Anyone with information regarding the missing items is urged to contact the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired at telephone numbers 636-1130 or 636-1129.
