A police special constable assigned to the Magistrate's court charged with extortion and obtaining property by deception, was today freed of the charges that were brought against him more than a year ago. Thirty six year old John Myvette who was assigned to the Magistrate's cell block was accused by Keon Williams a.k.a. 'Gambis' of accepting $2,865.00 from him on January 26, 2010, with the purpose of securing bail for him at the Supreme Court.
Williams, who was charged with an unnatural crime, was remanded into custody at Belize Central Prison, but was released instead of being sent to prison. It was a scandal at the time but Magistrate Kayla Teck dismissed the charges against Myvette today, after citing the failure of the prosecution to provide timely disclosure to the defendant's attorney, and failure to provide the court with intention to proceed with the charges.
