Tubal Takes On City House
posted (February 16, 2011)
The Tubal Institute is a trade and vocational school in Ladyville, and like all such schools, it gives students the opportunity to train in a trade.

But for these students, it's not all theory and practice in the workshop, they're taking their lessons into the real world with practical experience.

We found them on Lakeview street today where they are wiring a two-storey concrete house.

Monica Bodden found out more:…

28 electrical students of Tubal vocational and trade school are taking part in a project - to wire this 2 story concrete house on Lakeview Street.

The project is geared at exposing the students to the house wiring industry.

Rupert Anderson - Assistant Manager at tubal trade and vocational institute
"Last two weeks ago weeks did the construction students. Today is the electrical students. We want to show you what we are actually doing; they are wiring this entire house. They already put in the electrical boxes, and just waiting for the windows and doors to be installed then the wires will be pulled through. This is what our youngsters in Belize are being exposed to. We are actually trying to align our students with the requirements of the industries - that is vocational education. Whenever you meet the industries need, they are the boss. They tell us the standards that we are looking for and we align ourselves. So when the students get out there from the program they would be no strangers to what is required of them."

Tyler Tajhaus is a first year student - he is a part of the project and tells us about his experience so far.

Tyler Tajhaus - Electrical Student
"Basically we are installing some pans, switch and outlets. Basically when we work with our hands it feels more easier than when we do our practical. I feel that it will help us a lot out there when we install wires and so."

Monica Bodden
"Is it your first time installing wires for a house?"

Tyler Tajhaus - Electrical Student
"Ma'am I am a first year student so this is my first time."

Anderson says in order to continue these types of training - the school needs finances - and so they are asking for your assistance.

Rupert Anderson - Assistant Manager at tubal trade and vocational institute
"At Tubal we invite our industrial partners to come by Tubal to take a look and review us and see what is going on. we can definitely deal with some more financial help from the public to just to help us to foster this program to our youngsters. Tubal is in need of funding and that is our number one need right now. The education department is onboard with us and they have given us guides to follow and we have met all of that, its just that at this point in time in order for us to continue training we would like to get some more finances."

The work is being supervised by a certified electrician. They expect to finish by Friday….
