Deputy Dean Speaks
posted (March 2, 2011)
Yesterday Dean Samuels was elected Deputy Mayor. For this councilor finishing up his second elected term - it is the realization of a long time dream.

Today he told Monica Bodden that his is ready for the responsibility.

Dean Samuels
"First off i would like to say, thanks to my colleagues who put their trust and faith in me that I am capable of doing the job and I would like to say thanks to them. As you know I am a two time elected serving two terms member of the Belize City council."

"Yesterday we had our regular caucus meeting and we, the post for deputy mayor is up after a year and me and my esteem colleague, Erick Chan went up for the position and the vote went six - five so the votes were very close, and I was chosen to be the next Deputy Mayor of Belize City.

"I have always given a hundred fifty percent of myself when it comes to the Council, for me the Council is an eight to five that's how serious I take my job. What I think and I guess you guys can play this if you like, I think what I would suggest to the Prime Minister, the demands of the City have grown the City need elected official to put in more effort and more time, it would be good to weed out all who wants to run telling them that this is their job, this is full time and you got to apply yourself, if that is the post your elected for. The responsibility is a great one I must say we have a City administrator who has a zest for her job and financial controller and a mayor there and it makes my job a lot easier. I will be there when she is not at the end of the day to make sure that the business of the people and the council continue as it should. Chair meeting if she is not there and sign on checks basically and again, it a privilege for me to serve the Belizean people on a higher level. Five years I have been waiting for this position really and truly, I have waited, bared my time and it's a good feeling and I am quite happy with the outcome and happy to serve as the deputy mayor of Belize City."

Monica Bodden
"To your knowledge the decision that was made yesterday, is there any animosity within the council?"

Dean Samuels
"The decision that happen yesterday, first of all let me say it was a fair and just election and if there is I wouldn't know, the voting happen and I was elected and as far as I am concern let's move on and get on with the business of the people."

Monica Bodden
"So, So far no tensions?"

Dean Samuels
"No tension so far but you never know what may come, but until then. On March 7th officially I will be the next Deputy of Belize City."

We note Samuels's election is an indication that those councilors who are considered to be allied to Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers still control the balance of power in the council.
