Chinese Business Owner Killed – Not A Robbery: Son Briefly Detained
posted (March 8, 2011)
The question of who to detain is far less clear in the murder of 53 year old naturalized Belizean Bing Chang Zhao, the owner of Ming Ming Shop at the corner of Vernon Street and Magazine Road.

He was stabbed to death inside his property sometime on Saturday morning. Police found no signs of forced entry - and so his son was taken into custody for questioning. Our sources say that's partly because the night before, a neighbor had to call the police when the father and son were heard arguing bitterly the night before. Some sources in the neighborhood have told us they were fighting.

And then the next day at 9:40 am police were called to the residence where ZHAO was dead, face up, bathed in blood with a cut wound across the face and on the left knee. His son says he found him dead inside the storeroom.

Police removed his body from the property with the assistance of that same son - who was then detained, questioned and released.

Today Chairman of the Belize Chinese Association Edmund Kwan - who has been acting as a translator between the family and investigators - told 7news that police have found new evidence.

Edmund Kwan, Chairman - Belize Chinese Association
"To my knowledge is that the deceased was found around 9 am Saturday morning. The time of incident is expected to be early in the morning around 6-7 o' clock. He received a chop would to the face. Basically it is a burglary - that's what is suspected. Apparently right now the police are removing his son as a suspect because they have found more evidence on Sunday evening that proves otherwise. So right now the son is released, I believe they are looking for more than one suspect."

Monica Bodden
"What was found on Sunday?"

Edmund Kwan, Chairman - Belize Chinese Association
"The weapon and they say they found beer bottles."

Monica Bodden
"According to neighbors they made mention that they called the police the night before."

Edmund Kwan, Chairman - Belize Chinese Association
"Yes, but apparently the argument had nothing to do with it and it is just coincidence."

Police Press Officer Fitzroy Yearwood says that Zhao's son remains a person of interest and they hope to re-interview him as soon when they get a translator.
