Art that Provokes…
posted (March 11, 2011)
And those who don't want to work at a call center - may be able to find work as muses or models for portraits. We're sure plenty of those were used for the latest art exhibition EROTICA which opened last night at the Mexican Institute of Culture, is expected to do. The intent says the Embassy's Public Information Officer, is to give a 'thoughtful reflection on the theme of eroticism from an aesthetic point of view'. I had an opportunity last night to view the provocative group of paintings. Be forewarned that some of the pieces are of a graphic nature so you might not want kids to watch. Here are a few of the less explicit ones:..

Marcelino Miranda, Mexican Embassy Public Relation Officer
"What we are presenting here is an extraordinary collection by male and female Mexican artists. I am talking about artists from Quintana Roo and so we wanted to present this collection because first they set the theme as "Erotica" they are referring to the Greek word of "Eros" that is love, that is sensuality and in this case what they are intending to do is to present some thoughts and some images in which they want the public to think about the relationship between human body and sensuality and about love."

Jim McFadzean
"What will people that will come to this exhibition find the artwork here very provocative and to some extent very graphic."

Marcelino Miranda, Mexican Embassy Public Relation Officer
"What we are having here is that we are looking at the human body from the artistic point of view, so some of these images are challenging, they are clearly provocative in terms of the way they portray parts of the human body. Some images could be shocking for some people but at the same time it's a very good opportunity from the artistic point of view to have a look at the human body in a different perspective and also to reflect on the symbols of the human body and in terms of art and what they mean for the general population. I mean some of them are a part of the traditional views, some of them maybe are conservative views about the human body, so that's what the artists are trying to do is to challenge those kinds of traditional views about the human body and also the relationship between the human body and sensuality from the artistic point of view."

The exhibition is part of the cultural exchange between Mexico and Belize. It's intended to promote dialogue between artists from both countries. Admission is free and the Exhibition will remain open until April 8th, Monday thru Friday from 8:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M.

Kidney Awareness High In Belize

Yesterday was celebrated as World Kidney Day and as a part of sensitizing the public about the importance of their kidney, the Kidney Association of Belize held their first ever Mini health Fair. It began at 9 this morning in the City Center compound. The turnout was more than expected - as people rushed the opportunity of getting free testing done. 7news was out there.

Ruby Nicholas, Treasurer - Kidney Association
"We have invited the Ministry of Health, PAHO, KHMH, and The Diabetes Association and so we are asking the public to come in to view materials and also to do these testing. The results will come out by the end of the working day and we will be contacting the visitors who have pass through for them to become aware of knowing their status. It's a mini health fair and the name that we have place is "Know Your Health Status".

Monica Bodden
"Now what's the importance of actually getting this information to the general public?"

Ruby Nicholas, Treasurer - Kidney Association
"I think you are aware of the fact that we have had a lot of cases of kidney failures and when we find out from the patients - they would say 'we did not know' until the end stage. We are trying to do a preventative measure here where we want the public to become aware that if you know early about your kidney function - there is steps that you can do to avoid reaching at the end stage."

Monica Bodden
"What time did the mini fair begin?"

Ruby Nicholas, Treasurer - Kidney Association
"We began at 9am and actually we had people here from 7am this morning. We are presently at #224 that we have seen so far. We are catering for approximately over 300 people to be here. It's obvious that we are going to be meeting that target."

The fair was held under the theme "Know your health status". The Association says they plan to make it an annual event.
