Even In The Throes Of Disaster, Japan Gives

Even as it is recovering from one of the most devastating disasters in modern times, the government of Japan is still following through on grant commitments to Belize.

Ambassador Hiroshi Yamaguchi was in Belize today to hand over a 2.7 million US dollar grant for the improvement of health and nutrition in Children in poor Mayan communities in Toledo.

The signing took place at NEMO Headquarters in Belmopan and Yamaguchi outlined the thrust of the programme:.

"I understand that as many as over 33,000 residents which comprise more than 10% of the total population of Belize will benefit from this Japan project. Today's ceremony is a significant achievement which indicates genuine commitment by Japan to support the Mayan communities in Toledo Belize through an early childhood development approach which will focus on prenatal care, nutrition monitoring and school health interventions at the primary school level. The issue of health and wellness is a fundamental commitment of the government of Japan."
