Woman Accuses GSU Of Indiscriminate “Tasering”
posted (April 5, 2011)
And as we told you last night this weekend, the GSU also arrested Zane Castillo and charged him for possession of a firearm. It happened on Guerrerro Street in Belize City. But today, Zane's mom - who worked with the police department for 28 years - came to tell us that they handled her family with unnecessary roughness:…

Thelma Castillo, Mother of Zane Castillo
"I just heard a ruckus through coming through the backdoor. And I saw a big police man come in with a gun, and he starting cranking the gun. He rushed straight to Zane and started tasering him all over. So I got up and asked him to please explain to me what happened. I spoke to him nicely because I was working with police for 28 years, and I just resigned in February of last year. So I didn't expect that-"

Jules Vasquez
"You were a civilian personnel for the police?"

Thelma Castillo, Mother of Zane Castillo
"Yes, secretary, so I didn't expect that they would come into my house like that. But anyways, he came in and jumped straight on Zane, and I asked him what happened. He said that Zane just threw an object over the fence. Well before I could even speak to him anymore, he started to taser Zane, and when I tried to hold his hand to tell him not to tase my son and to explain to me what is happening, he tased me on my hand. Up to now, my hand still feels kinda numb."

Jules Vasquez
"But maam, you can't swear for your son."

Thelma Castillo, Mother of Zane Castillo
"No I will not swear for a 20 year-old man at all, that's not true. I will not swear for him."

Jules Vasquez
"So what you objecting to is the treatment?"

Thelma Castillo, Mother of Zane Castillo
"When he came in, yes"

Jules Vasquez
"The Gang Suppression Unit is saying that your son is affiliated with South Side Gangsters."

Thelma Castillo, Mother of Zane Castillo
"I can't say anything to that because I don't know what he does behind my back. So I can't say anything to that."

Jules Vasquez
"But now after 28 years in the department, working with the department, you would have expected - you're saying - a little more courtesy?"

Thelma Castillo, Mother of Zane Castillo
"Courtesy? Yes"

Jules Vasquez
"I recently received one of these - what you call a tase - I call it a stunner. It makes a crackling noise right? A silver object."

Thelma Castillo, Mother of Zane Castillo
"Yes and it sparks."

Jules Vasquez
"Yes sparks, I got one on my backside. I didn't have any lasting injury or anything from it. You genuinely believe that your son was knocked out by this?"

Thelma Castillo, Mother of Zane Castillo
"No I didn't see him get knocked out or anything, but I think that he got uncomfortable because he started to shift around a lot. They continuously tased him."
