Recently, we've seen a lot of regional news about friction between Jamaica and Barbados.
It's because Jamaican females claim they are being sexually harassed and accused of illicit activity by Barbadian Immigration authorities.
It's become a big deal, because as CARICOM member states, Jamaicans should move freely into Barbados or any other CARICOM country.
And that's how it should be for Belizeans as well. But now, one Belizean gay activist group claims that a Belizean transgender person was sexually discriminated against at Piarco International Airport in Trinidad.
This is Mia Quetzal from the Orange Walk District, who flew to Trinidad on Monday to attend a regional meeting.
According to gay rights activist Caleb Orozco who is in Trinidad, the problem occurred when Mia arrived at the airport. The immigration officer checked her passport and saw that under sex, it said "male."
Now, Mia Queztal dresses and appears as a female. According to Orozco's account, the immigration officer asked,
"Why does your passport say you are male?"
Mia then said, "I am indeed male."
The officer then sent Mia to the corner and then informed her co-workers who, Orozco claims, "proceeded to parade up and down staring, laughing, and giggling" at Mia.
A hour and a half later, Mia got back his passport without an explanation.
Orozco has demanded an explanation from relevant authorities.
