He made a historic speech in the House of Representatives a month ago, and since then Orange Walk East Area Representative Marcel Cardona has been written off by the UDP, the party he was elected under now says they don't even want him on the same side of the house as them.
The UDP craftily concluded that he has "constructively resigned." Well, now, Cardona says he doesn't want anything to do with the party, either. That's a slightly different position than the one he first took when he said he hadn't resigned. Now, in a new release form a new group he calls the Orange Walk East Upliftment Committee, he, quote, "Renounces all further membership, participation, and affiliation with the UDP Party."
Cardona says his new group is "nonpolitically aligned and independent".He says he hopes it will bring betterment, progress and development to the people of Orange Walk East, who, quote, "have been…victimized by the current vindictive UDP Government," end quote.
The statement says the new group can, quote "make Prime Minister Dean Barrow kneel before the will of the people and the people's leader for Orange Walk East. Marcel Cardona Cervantes!"
Rather dramatic, but the noteworthy part is that Cardona could be inviting a bye election. The constitution says, "a member of the house shall vacate his seat if, having been a candidate of a political party and elected to the House of Representatives as a candidate of that political party, he resigns from that political party or crosses the floor."
Well, by "renouncing membership" Cardona seems to be resigning, but we'll wait for the legal experts to deal with that one.
