GSU Makes Major Weed Find
posted (April 26, 2011)
But that 12 gramme find was minor, on Sunday the GSU made a major drug seizure in Hattieville. At 7:30, the Unit executed a search warrant at the residence of Dion ARNOLD on the Dollar Bank Road, which is at Mile 16 ½ on the Western Highway. Nothing was found in the house, but when police searched the bushes of an adjacent property they found a large green duffel bag with eight parcels of compressed cannabis and a large black travel bag with six parcels of compressed cannabis.

The first bag weighed in at almost 80 pounds while the second, weighed 58 pounds, a total of just over 137 pounds - with an approximate street value of more than twenty five thousand Belize dollars. The marijuana is believed to have been smuggled in from Guatemala - which law enforcement says is a frequent source of the marijuana sold locally. As we noted at the top, police found the weed in a property adjoining Dion Arnold - but since it was in an empty lot, it had to be labeled found property and no one could be charged.

But that's hardly any consolation for Arnold because the 21 year old was busted on Saturday at 1138 Partridge Street the home of 19 year old Rudy Cocom. Police searched the house in a pre-dawn operation and at 6:20 am, they found 90 grams of cannabis hidden in a black plastic bag hidden between a wall in the bedroom. They arrested Arnold and Cocom, as well as Earl Reynaurd, Carlos Ponce and a 17 year old. They were all jointly charged for "DRUG TRAFFICKING".

Today in court, the 17 year old pleaded guilty to trafficking and was sentenced to 3 years in prison and fined ten thousand dollars. But even though the minor pleaded guilty, the charge against the others was not dropped. They all pleaded not guilty. Except for Reynaurd, they were all offered bail of five thousand dollars and their case adjourned to May 16th. Reynaurd was denied bail because last week he was charged with three counts of drug trafficking and so he was already out on bail. The Gang Suppression Unit says this bust and the one at Hattieville are related as all players are affiliated with the George Street Gang.

The GSU made one more significant bust this weekend. It happened on Saturday afternoon, when, acting in information, the GSU intercepted 38 year old Wallace RUBIO at the mile four checkpoint as he was coming into the city on a bus. Rubio was carrying a silver pot and when police searched it, they found almost two pounds of cannabis. RUBIO was charged with "drug trafficking." The GSU says that the pot with "pot" was to be delivered to the Conch Shell Bay area where RUBIO is an alleged courier. In other police news, on Friday, at about 6:20pm police responded to a report of a man seen with a firearm on Mopan Street. A responding Police mobile spotted a dark man in a white T-shirt and short pants run into the Mayflower area and throw an object resembling a firearm into a yard. Police searched the yard and found a black .38 revolver with five live rounds of ammunition. The items were then labeled as found property since the man escaped.
