Once More To Haiti For BDF
posted (April 27, 2011)
It's been more than a year now since a catastrophic earthquake devastated Haiti.

Dozens of nations around the world rallied to bring relief to the Haitian people, reaching out with both financial and humanitarian aid.

Belize was no exception. Relief organizations fundraised for the rebuilding effort, while the government did its part, sending dozens of BDF soldiers to assist in both peacekeeping and reconstruction efforts.

Now for the second time in a year, the country is sending two teams of soldiers to continue with the country's reconstruction efforts. Yesterday, the first of two contingents of soldiers from the Belize Defense Force Light Engineer Company was deployed as part of a task force to Haiti, to participate in a mission dubbed New Horizon.

They will be working jointly with the Louisiana Army National Guard on the mission and will be providing a platoon of thirty light engineers for two rotations of one month's duration.

The mission of the task force is to provide military support to the civil authorities in Haiti, provide medical assistance and to conduct general engineering projects such as the reconstruction of schools and clinics in the vicinity of Gonaives Haiti. The initiative is coordinated by the Government of Belize and the U.S Southern Command. The first contingent is scheduled to return on the 28th of May, whilst the second contingent will deploy on the 26th of May, and return on the 25th of June.
