Community Coordinator Guild Remanded To Prison
posted (May 17, 2011)
Emmerson Guild, well known community activist, organizer and businessman is in the Belize Central Prison in Hattieville tonight.

Guild was arraigned today on a charge of aggravated assault, after a former worker reported to police Guild pulled a gun on him. Guild pleaded not guilty, but there is no bail for a firearm offence, so the 57 year old was remanded to prison. His attorney can apply to the Supreme Court for bail - but that can only be done after 14 days - unless the DPP waives the waiting period.

Here's what happened: Charles Olivera, who was a mason for Guild, claims that at 6:00 am on Thursday, May 12th. Guild went to his house and punched him in the left eye. Olivera said Guild pointed a black 9 millimeter pistol at him and told him, "I wah shoot you, bring back my thing!"

Olivera told police that "the thing" in question is a DVD player that Guild accused him of stealing.

Guild told our court reporter that he did punch Olivera but says he did not pull a weapon on him. Guild says that he hired Olivera to do mason work at his home on Zericote street and Olivera stole over three thousand dollars worth of jewelry. But whatever his side of the story is, he's been accused of pulling a weapon, prison remand is automatic. It's a major blow for Guild - who has been the coordinator for the Mission Milagro project in Belize - which allows persons who need eye surgery to go to Venezuela for it.

At various times, he has also been involved in community peace mediation initiatives.
