Government Bends Over Backwards To Accommodate Big Butane
posted (May 17, 2011)
The law for mandatory scales at places where butane is sold was signed in mid February - and the vendors should have complied by the end of March.

But the proper scales weren't available in country at the time and so another extension was granted. Now, it's 48 days later, and word came from the Bureau of Standards today that another extension has been granted.

According to the public relations personnel at the Bureau of Standards - and we quote:

"On the request of the Government Of Belize - LPG suppliers have been given until June first 2011 to fully comply with the regulations." End quote.

That will make the complete time of extension 92 days - just to install and verify scales! While the lax implementation timeline would leave anyone to wonder just whose side government is on - not every company has been delinquent in adhering to the law: So far, 12 of 16 butane suppliers are in compliance. By in compliance, we mean, they have gotten the proper scales, paid the money for verification and had those scales verified.

Four companies have not fully complied - and we are made to understand that three of those four are importers - meaning the larger operations.

This is after they were sent a notice of default on May 6th. informing them that they had a week to provide an update on the status of the weighing instruments applied for, and requesting that the initial verification fee of 300 dollars be paid.

As we understood it, the plan initially was to serve them with a notice of intended prosecution but that has been scrapped presumably because government stepped in to grant the butane suppliers yet another extension - the third by our count.
