Cardona Faces One More Government – Induced Humiliation
posted (May 17, 2011)
Since he "blazed up" the UDP in late March, UDP Orange Walk East Area Representative Marcel Cardona has been more or less kicked out of the UDP, and then put the sit with the opposition - and now today he had his official vehicle "stronged" from him.

In an accounting of the event by Cardona, this afternoon the police visited his law office in Orange Walk Town with instructions to "confiscate" his Government vehicle, a Toyota Hilux.

Cardona says that NICH had called twice in the last few days saying that someone would have been sent to pick up the vehicle.

Cardona says his staff informed the caller that the vehicle would only be handed over to persons authorized in writing to collect it, in the presence of witnesses and possibly members of the media, to confirm the relatively good condition of the vehicle at the time of delivery.

But all that wasn't necessary. As the pictures show, Police just clamped the wheels, chained it up and towed it away by force.

Information Society: an Ideal

Today is world telecom and information society day and with the recent census showing that less than a quarter of Belizeans accessing the internet by any means - the term information society seems a little grand.

But the show went on today with an exhibition and showcase by Telemedia.

Monica Bodden was there:

Monica Bodden Reporting
Belize Telemedia Limited joined the rest of the globe today in celebrating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

This morning the official opening ceremony was held at the Princess Hotel.

Nestor Vasquez, Chairman, BTL
"Today we join the rest of the world while we celebrate together under the theme "Better life in rural communities with ICT's". World Telecommunications Day is celebrated by all countries that are members of the international telecommunications union. The ITU is a United Nations base organization which has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Its principal role us to coordinate the global telecommunications network and services of member states and of the private sector as well. Telemedia takes this opportunity every year to engage and expose the young students, the media and professionals on the inner working of Telemedia and its significance in developing the country of Belize. World Telecoms Day is rightly considered a celebration of the development of telecommunications along with the many accomplishments of the ITU around the world. Here in Belize it is no different."

As a part of celebrating the Day, Telemedia held an exhibition to showcase their many products and services.

Anjali Vasquez, Public Relations Manager
"Telemedia puts out this huge exhibition where all the staff, I mean all the people that you see in here - they are people who have dedicated their time and put together exhibits that display either their operations or educational things like for students. We even have the finance department out here. We have operator services out here. We have the marketing department, so everyone really gets involve here today at the Princess."

The display showcased creativity but most of all telecommunications technology at its best.

Anjali Vasquez, Public Relations Manager
"It's a bit a competition internally, so people start thinking of new things to do as soon as this day is over. So they are already thinking about 2012, but logistically we start preparing about two weeks in advance just to make sure we get everyone acquainted with their booths space. Usually we have absolutely no question who is going to get involve, but this year we had four new departments which were willing to get involve and be a part of the display and it's been really exciting. If you walk around you are going to see trees inside of this room and you are going to see mannequins and you are going to see a giant compute4r screen and its really cool. This is because staff has taught this up on their own and decided to come out here and put it up for the kids and to the public at large."

Monica Bodden
"Ryan, just tell us a little bit about what's taking place at your booth?"

Ryan Casimiro, Senior Switching Technician
"Basically this year what we decided to do is basically give a comprehensive and a holistic overview of actually what our department encompasses and what BTL is all about in terms of issuing out service to the entire community. As you can clearly see here depicting we have the entire country like I initially told you, we have a total of 28 exchanges that my department is actually responsible for. Apart from those exchanges, we also have remote exchanges and what we did here is actually have miniatures of all those exchanges in the different districts that actually show medium of communication and how it can actually reach to those various exchanges."

Monica Bodden
"Now Mel just tell us what taking place at you guys booth as we speak?"

Melanie Blake, Senior Marketing Representative
"Well today the marketing department did something creative - what we did this time instead of the normal rehearsing of the skits - what we did is a pre-recorded skit where we are promoting our products and services and we just wanted to do something so that the kids could relate, so that it could be funny and that something that they could learn at the same time about our products and services."

Monica Bodden
"What are some of the services and products on display?"

Melanie Blake, Senior Marketing Representative
"Well one of the sections about our booth we have a theatre - again the students can come into the theatre and we will be showing them different services that BTL offer along with the commercial. We did it in a news line story so it's very funny. We also have a game booth which is "Digicell's deal or no deal" again the students can come by and they could have some fun. We are the marketing department - we want to have these kids laugh about Digicell and at the same time we want them to learn about our products and services. We also have our information boot where the customers can come and you can learn about our new services that the company is planning and looking forward to launch coming soon."
